A wide-ranging English power trio, Urne draws on progressive, death, doom, sludge, stoner, groove, hardcore, thrash, and post-metal to craft a distinctive brand of sonic malevolence.
Formed in London in 2016 from the ashes of doomy metalcore group Hang the Bastard, Urne comprises vocalist/bassist Joe Nally, guitarist Angus Neyra, and drummer Richard Wiltshire. Citing influences such as Metallica, Gojira, Alice In Chains, and Mastodon, the trio independently released their debut EP, The Mountain of Gold, in 2018.
They inked a deal with Candlelight Records ahead of the release of their debut long-player, 2021’s nervy, sludge-thrash opus Serpent & Spirit. Two years later, Urne returned with A Feast on Sorrow, a technical and emotionally complex set of songs inspired by the band members’ recent experiences with suffering and loss.
2026’s Setting Fire to the Sky saw Urne make a tonal adjustment, delivering crushing weight with a more hopeful, emotional timbre, resulting in a powerful set of songs rooted both in melody and might. The LP’s lead single, “Harken the Waves,” featured a guest vocal from Mastodon’s Troy Sanders.
